How to Optimize Your Google Business Profile for Local Rankings (2026 Guide)

If two businesses offer the same service in the same city, the one with the better optimized Google Business Profile often wins the customer. Not because it always has a bigger budget. Because Google and customers can understand it more clearly.

That trust is built one detail at a time: the right category, complete business information, real services, fresh photos, credible reviews, and consistent activity.

This guide walks through every part of that profile in the order that matters most: categories, services, business description, posts, reviews, photos, citations, local landing pages, AI search, and tracking. No vague advice. Just the steps local businesses and agencies should follow in 2026.

Quick Answer

To optimize a Google Business Profile for local rankings, start with the most accurate primary category, complete every business field, add relevant services and attributes, write a clear 750-character business description, publish useful Google Posts regularly, request genuine reviews without incentives, reply to reviews quickly, upload real business photos, keep NAP details consistent across citations, support the profile with local landing pages, and track ranking and Performance data monthly.

How Google Business Profile Ranking Actually Works

Google explains that local search visibility mainly comes down to three key factors: relevance, distance, and prominence. These continue to play a major role in how businesses appear in local results.

Relevance is about how closely your business profile matches what a person is searching for. Categories, services, attributes, and clear website content help here.
Distance is how close your business or service area is to the person searching. You cannot fake distance, but you can define your real service areas accurately.
Prominence is how well known and trusted your business appears to be. Reviews, links, citations, brand mentions, and engagement all support this.

Independent local SEO research also supports the same practical priority: Google Business Profile signals and review signals remain among the most influential local pack and Maps ranking groups. Whitespark’s 2026 report lists Primary GBP Category as the top individual local pack ranking factor. That does not mean your website or citations are unimportant. It means your profile foundation should be fixed first, then supported by reviews, citations, and local pages.

Ranking Factor Group	Approximate Priority	What Controls It
Google Business Profile signals	Highest controllable group	Category, services, business info, attributes, posts, photos
Review signals	Very important	Review count, rating, recency, keywords in reviews, owner responses
Link signals	Important support signal	Website authority and relevant local backlinks
On-page and citation signals	Important support signal	Website content, local pages, schema, and NAP consistency
Behavioral signals	Engagement signal	Clicks, calls, direction requests, and profile interactions

The takeaway: start with the profile, then reviews, then the supporting ecosystem around it.

Step 1: Get the Foundation Right

Before touching advanced optimization, confirm the basics are accurate and complete. Incomplete or inconsistent profiles are still one of the most common reasons businesses lose visibility.

Business name: Use the same business name that your customers know and recognize in the real world. Do not add extra keywords unless they are part of the real name shown on signage, documents, and your website.
Address: storefronts should use the exact address that matches their website and citations. Service-area businesses should hide the address if customers are not served there.
Phone number: use a number that connects to the actual business location or team. If you use call tracking, keep the number consistent and properly configured.
Hours: keep regular hours, holiday hours, and special hours current. Wrong hours create a poor customer experience and reduce trust.
Website URL: Add a link to the page that best matches your business and what customers are looking for. For multi-location businesses, link each profile to its matching location page.
Attributes: complete relevant attributes such as accessibility, appointment options, amenities, or service options where available.

Step 2: Choose Your Categories Strategically

Your primary category is one of the highest-leverage decisions on the entire profile. It tells Google what kind of business you are and shapes the searches where you are eligible to appear.

Primary category

Choose the most specific category that accurately describes your main business. Do not choose a category only because a competitor uses it. The category must reflect the real service or business type customers expect from you.

Secondary categories

Add secondary categories only when they accurately reflect the services or products your business offers. Extra categories can help Google understand the business, but irrelevant categories can confuse both Google and customers.

How to check your category setup

Search Google Maps for your main service in your city and study the top relevant competitors.
Check whether a more specific category exists before defaulting to a broad one.
Review your category list every quarter because Google updates available categories over time.

Step 3: Build Out Your Services

The Services section is one of the easiest places to improve profile relevance. Many competitors leave it thin, outdated, or half-filled.

List every real service you offer, not only the two or three most popular services.
Write a unique description for important services using plain customer language.
Match profile services with your website service pages so the profile and site support the same claims.
Group related services in a way that makes sense for customers, especially if you offer many services.

Step 4: Write a Description That Works for Humans and AI

Google’s description field allows up to 750 characters. Use it to explain what the business does, who it serves, and why customers should trust it. Keep the first sentence clear because customers may not read beyond it.

What to include

What you do, in plain language, in the first sentence.
The city, locality, or service region mentioned naturally.
Differentiators such as years in business, certifications, specialties, or response time.
A soft call to action near the end.

What to avoid

Keyword stuffing, repeated phrases, or “near me” wording that sounds unnatural.
Copying your homepage text word for word.
Phone numbers, URLs, prices, special promotions, or offer details inside the description field.

For example, “Urban Smile Dental Care offers family dentistry, cosmetic treatments, dental implants, and emergency dental services in Bengaluru. Our experienced team focuses on clear diagnosis, comfortable treatment, and transparent follow-up. Book an appointment to discuss your dental needs with our team.’’

Step 5: Use Google Posts to Stay Active

Google Posts help you share updates, offers, and events directly on your Business Profile. They are useful for engagement and freshness, but they should not be treated as a standalone ranking shortcut.

Important 2026 update: According to Google, posts are archived after six months unless you’ve added a specific date range. That means regular posting still matters, but the old “posts expire after seven days” advice should not be repeated as a blanket rule.

Post types and when to use them

Update posts: use them for general business updates, new services, tips, or announcements.
Offer posts: use them for discounts or promotions with clear start and end dates.
Event posts: use them for workshops, open days, launches, community events, or limited-time events.

A realistic posting rhythm

Publish at least one useful post every week or every two weeks depending on business activity. Each post should include a relevant image, a short caption, and a clear action such as Call, Learn more, or Book.Link to the most relevant page, not always the homepage.

Step 6:Turn Reviews Into a Ranking and Trust Asset

Reviews influence both customer decisions and local trust signals. Treat review management as a system, not an afterthought.

Generate more reviews consistently

Ask at the moment of highest satisfaction, such as after a job is completed or a purchase is made.
Send a direct review link by SMS, WhatsApp, or email instead of asking customers to search manually.
Train staff to ask politely and then follow up with the link the same day.
Never offer money, discounts, gifts, or incentives in exchange for reviews. Google considers reviews given in exchange for incentives to be fake or misleading content.

Respond to every review

Try to respond to both positive and negative reviews within a few days. Mention the actual service naturally when it fits, but do not stuff keywords into every response. A calm, helpful reply to a negative review often builds more trust than silence.

Review velocity matters

There is no fixed number of reviews needed to rank in the local pack. A steady flow of genuine, recent reviews is usually healthier than a large review count that has gone stale.

Step 7: Optimize Photos and Videos

Photos help customers understand whether the business feels real, current, and trustworthy. They also give Google more context about the business experience.

Upload real photos, not stock images. Customers trust authentic visuals more.
Cover the key photo types: exterior, interior, team, services, completed work, products, and seasonal updates.
Add new photos regularly instead of uploading a large batch once and never returning.
Follow Google’s technical guidance: JPG or PNG, 10 KB to 5 MB, with a recommended resolution of 720 px by 720 px.
Use short videos when they genuinely help customers understand the service or location.
Encourage customer photos through honest reviews, without incentives.

Step 8: Build Consistent Local Citations

A citation is any online mention of your business name, address, and phone number. Citation consistency helps Google confirm that your business is legitimate and located where you say it is.

Where to build citations

Major directories and data sources relevant to your country and industry.
Industry-specific directories such as healthcare, legal, hospitality, or home service directories.
Local business associations, chambers, city directories, and trusted regional listings.
Review and social platforms that customers in your industry actually use.

The rule that matters most

Keep your name, address, and phone number consistent everywhere. Small differences may not always create a problem, but consistency reduces ambiguity and supports trust. Audit existing listings before creating new ones.

Step 9: Support Your Profile With Local Landing Pages

Your Business Profile should not operate in isolation. The website should confirm the same services, locations, and trust signals that the profile presents.

What to build

A dedicated page for each important service you offer, with enough detail to help a visitor make a decision.
A dedicated page for each city, branch, or service area when you operate in multiple locations.
Location pages with matching NAP details, map embeds, local reviews, and LocalBusiness schema markup where appropriate.

On-page elements that reinforce your profile

LocalBusiness schema markup with matching name, address, and phone number.
Service area or city names used naturally in titles, headings, and body content.
Embedded Google Map for verified physical locations where suitable.
Internal links between service pages and location pages.

Step 10: Optimize for AI Search

Local discovery now includes more AI-assisted experiences. That does not replace classic local SEO, but it changes how clear and consistent your business information needs to be.

What helps AI systems understand your business

Structured data: use LocalBusiness, Service, Review, and FAQ schema on relevant website pages.
Clear answers: answer common customer questions directly on your website and service pages.
Consistency: keep business name, hours, services, service areas, and contact details aligned across GBP, website, and citations.
Review quality: earn recent, specific reviews that explain what customers actually experienced.
Freshness: publish useful posts, add photos, update services, and respond to reviews so profile data stays current.
Specific details: include response times, coverage areas, certifications, specialties, and proof instead of generic “best service” copy.

Important update to old advice

Do not rely on the old recommendation to fill the Google Business Profile Q&A section. Google removed the public Q&A feature from most profiles in late 2025 and replaced much of that customer-question experience with AI-assisted answers in Maps. Move those answers into your website FAQs and keep your profile fields complete.

Step 11: Track Rankings and Measure What Matters

Optimization without measurement becomes guesswork. Track profile visibility and customer actions monthly so you know which changes are working.

Metric	Why It Matters	Where to Find It
Local pack ranking by keyword	Shows where you stand against competitors for important local searches	Rank tracking tools such as GMB Pro’s rank tracker
Profile views and searches	Shows whether visibility is growing before customers take action	Google Business Profile Performance
Calls, direction requests, website clicks	Shows whether visibility is turning into real customer action	Google Business Profile Performance
Review count and average rating over time	Tracks reputation trend, not just a snapshot	Google Business Profile and review monitoring tools
Search terms and discovery trends	Shows which queries are driving profile visibility	Google Business Profile Performance

Track rankings from multiple points around your service area, not only from your own office. Local rankings can change depending on where the searcher is located, so a grid or location-aware rank tracker gives a more realistic picture.

Common Mistakes That Quietly Kill Rankings

Keyword stuffing the business name. This risks suspension and creates a poor customer experience.
Leaving services or attributes blank. An incomplete profile gives competitors an easy advantage.
Buying or incentivizing reviews. This violates Google policy and can lead to review removal or profile issues.
Using outdated post advice. Posts do not universally expire after seven days. Google says posts older than six months are archived unless a date range is set.
Relying on Google Q&A advice from old guides. Public Q&A has been removed from most profiles, so build FAQs on your website instead.
Using “geo-tagged photos” as a ranking shortcut. Real, relevant, high-quality photos matter more than metadata tricks.
Inconsistent NAP across directories. This weakens trust and creates confusion.
Posting once and disappearing. Local SEO rewards consistency over time.
Ignoring negative reviews. Silence can reduce customer trust.
Using the same thin landing page for every city. Location pages should be useful and distinct.

Putting It All Together

None of these steps works in isolation. A strong primary category with an empty services section will not do enough. A great description with no recent reviews will not convert. Local ranking rewards businesses that treat their Google Business Profile as an ongoing channel, not a one-time setup task.

The businesses winning local search in 2026 are not necessarily the biggest ones. They are the ones showing up consistently, in every small detail, month after month.

If keeping up with this manually feels like a full-time job, that is exactly the gap GMB Pro was built to close. It helps with rank tracking, review management, AI-assisted post scheduling, and profile audits from one dashboard. You can start a free 14-day trial and see where your profile stands today.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to rank a Google Business Profile?

Most businesses can see early movement within four to eight weeks of consistent work, but competitive markets can take three to six months or longer. Timelines vary by category, city, competition, review strength, website support, and starting profile quality.

What is the most important Google Business Profile ranking factor?

The primary GBP category remains one of the highest-impact controllable ranking factors. Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors report lists Primary GBP Category as the top individual local pack factor.

Do Google Posts help local rankings?

Google Posts are not a confirmed standalone ranking factor. They help keep a profile fresh, useful, and action-oriented. They can also support relevance and engagement when written around real services and customer questions.

How many reviews do I need to rank in the local 3 pack?

There is no fixed number. Review quality, recency, velocity, sentiment, average rating, and owner responses all matter. A steady flow of genuine reviews is healthier than a large but stale review count.

Can I optimize a Google Business Profile without a physical storefront?

Yes. Service-area businesses can hide their address and define real service areas. They can still optimize categories, services, photos, reviews, posts, and website alignment.

Should I add keywords to my business name?

No. Use the real-world business name. Adding keywords that are not part of your actual business name can violate Google guidelines and create suspension risk.

Should I optimize the Q&A section of my Google Business Profile ?

No, not as a core tactic. The public Q&A feature was removed from most profiles. Add customer questions and answers to your website FAQ and service pages instead.

Should I geo-tag my Google Business Profile photos?

Do not rely on geo-tagging as a ranking tactic. Focus on real, relevant, high-quality photos that follow Google’s format and quality guidance.

What should I track after optimizing my profile?

Track local keyword rankings, profile views, search terms, calls, direction requests, website clicks, reviews, and rating trends each month.

How can GMB Pro help with optimization?

GMB Pro helps with rank tracking, review management, AI-assisted post scheduling, profile audits, and reporting from one dashboard, making it easier to keep optimization work consistent over time.

For three and a half years, publishing a post on Google Business Profile meant guessing whether anyone actually saw it. Google removed post view counts in February 2023 and never replaced them. That changed this month. In its September 2026 Small Business Bulletin, Google confirmed that post view counts are rolling out globally, bringing a per-post visibility number back into the dashboard for the first time since 2023.This guide explains exactly what is returning, what it does not tell you, how to check it on your own profile, and what it likely means, and does not mean, for your local ranking. Because Google is still rolling this out, some details are not yet confirmed. We have flagged every one of those clearly so you know what is fact and what is still open.Key Facts At a Glance:Google announced the change in its September 2026 Small Business Bulletin, posted to the Business Profile Help Community by Google employee Lisa Landsman.Google calls the feature Google Posts Reporting and describes it as one of its most requested features.View counts cover posts published in the previous 18 months, on a rolling basis. The count applies to all post types: updates, offers, and events.Views are combined from Google Search and Google Maps into one single number per post. The feature is rolling out globally but is not yet available in the Business Profile API.Post button clicks have not returned, only views. What Happened: Post View Counts Are Rolling Out GloballyGoogle's September 2026 Small Business Bulletin, titled "Track your Google Post views," confirmed that businesses can now see how many times local customers viewed each individual post. Google describes the reporting as covering three specific things.Posts published over the previous 18 months, on a rolling basis. All post types, including updates, offers, and events.Views from both Google Search and Google Maps, combined into one number. The bulletin states the feature is "currently rolling out globally, not yet available in the API." That phrasing matters. It means the rollout applies worldwide, but it is landing gradually account by account, and it means the numbers are only visible inside the Business Profile dashboard itself, not through any connected reporting tool. This is also why choosing the right google business profile management software matters when new data points become available. The change was not a total surprise. In August 2026, a screenshot circulated on social media showing view counts on posts for one account while other users could not see the same feature, which pointed to a limited test running ahead of the official announcement. The September bulletin formalized what had looked like an early experiment into a scoped, global rollout. What Counts as a "View," Exactly?Google has not defined what counts as a post view. This is the single most important caveat in the entire announcement, and it is worth sitting with before you start comparing numbers across posts. There are two very different ways a "view" could be counted. It could count each unique person only once, no matter how many times they scroll past the same post. Or it could count every single appearance, so one person scrolling past a post three times in a day would add three to the total. These two definitions can produce dramatically different numbers for the exact same amount of real attention. For comparison, Google's existing Profile Views metric in the Business Profile Performance report counts each person once per day. It is reasonable to guess that post views could follow a similar logic, but Google has not confirmed this for posts specifically, and the help pages for posts had not been updated to define it as of this feature's initial rollout. Treat the number as a useful relative signal for now, this post got more attention than that one, rather than a precise count you can plug into a spreadsheet formula with full confidence. How to Check Post View Counts on Your ProfileThere is no new menu or separate report to learn. The count appears directly where you already manage your posts.Sign in to your Google Business Profile using the Google account that manages your listing.Select "Posts" from the dashboard menu.Look at each post card. If the rollout has reached your account, you will see a view count printed directly on the card, alongside the post's content and date.Check posts from the last 18 months. Anything older will not display a count, since that is the outer edge of the reporting window. If you manage more than one location, you currently need to check each profile individually, since this data is not yet available through the API or any connected multi-location dashboard.A Short History: Why This Data Disappeared, and How It Came BackContext helps here, because this is not the first time Google has changed what it measures on Business Profile. Here is the timeline as reported.DateWhat HappenedFebruary 20, 2023Google discontinues post views, post button clicks, and photo view counts as part of its migration to the Business Profile Performance API, with no replacement listed.August 2025Google refreshes its post creation tool, giving business owners one consolidated place to see and manage everything they have published.November 2025Google adds the ability to schedule posts in advance and publish the same post to multiple locations at once.March 25, 2026Google adds an Offers metric, covering views and clicks, to the Business Profile Performance report.August 2026A screenshot circulates showing post view counts live on one account while other accounts do not have it, suggesting a limited test.September 10, 2026Google's Small Business Bulletin confirms post view counts as "Google Posts Reporting," rolling out globally, not yet in the API.Seen as a sequence, this looks less like a single isolated feature and more like Google steadily rebuilding measurement around Posts over the past year, from a better creation tool, to scheduling and bulk publishing, to now a visibility metric. Whether that trend continues toward richer reporting, or toward API access, is not something Google has stated, but the pattern is worth watching. What This Data Does Not Tell YouIt is easy to over-read a new number the moment it appears. Before you do, keep these limits in mind.LimitationWhat This Means for YouNo click dataYou can see that a post was viewed, but not whether anyone tapped the button, called, or visited your website because of it.No confirmed definition of "view"Comparing exact numbers across posts, or across businesses, should be treated as directional, not precise, until Google clarifies the counting method. Not in the APIAgencies and multi-location brands cannot pull this into a centralized dashboard yet. It has to be checked manually, profile by profile.18-month window onlyOlder posts, even ones that performed well at the time, will not show historical view data now.Gradual rolloutNot every account has the feature yet, so an absence of a view count on your posts does not necessarily mean anything is wrong.Do Post Views Affect Local Ranking?Google has never confirmed that publishing posts, or the views they receive, directly influences where your profile ranks in local search. Independent ranking factor research, such as the studies local SEO firm Whitespark runs each year, has generally placed Posts well down the list of signals that move a listing up the map pack, behind categories, reviews, and proximity. For a deeper breakdown, read this guide on google business profile ranking factors. The more accurate way to think about Posts, including this new view data, is as an engagement and activity signal rather than a lever you pull to directly climb rankings. An active, regularly updated profile tends to correlate with a business that is also collecting reviews, keeping photos current, and answering messages promptly, all of which matter more for ranking on their own. Post views are a useful window into whether your content is landing with the people already looking at your profile, not a shortcut to outranking a competitor.Post Views vs Other Google Business Profile MetricsPost view counts are one piece of a bigger measurement picture. Here is where they sit relative to the metrics you may already track in the Business Profile Performance report.MetricWhat It MeasuresWhere to Find ItPost viewsHow many times a specific post was seen across Search and Maps, past 18 monthsIndividual post card in the Posts sectionProfile viewsHow many times your overall listing was viewed, counted once per person per dayPerformance reportSearch queriesThe actual terms people typed before finding your profilePerformance reportCalls, website clicks, direction requestsDirect actions taken from your profile as a wholePerformance reportOffers metricViews and clicks specifically on Offer-type posts, added March 2026Performance reportNotice the gap: the Offers metric already tracked views and clicks for one specific post type. The new Post Views feature extends visibility, but not clicks, across every post type. That is a meaningful but partial fix, and it is worth watching whether Google eventually brings click data to updates and events as well. How to Actually Use Post View CountsOnce the feature reaches your profile, here is how to put the number to work rather than just glancing at it.Compare post types against each other. Do service highlights consistently out-view offers, or the reverse? Let a few months of real data guide what you post more of.Watch for posting-time patterns. If you post at different times or days, note which slots tend to produce stronger early view counts.Treat it as one input, not the whole picture. A high-view post that generates no calls or bookings is still worth questioning. Pair post views with your overall calls, clicks, and direction requests to judge real impact.Keep a simple running log. Since this data is not yet in the API, a basic spreadsheet with post date, type, topic, and view count is enough to spot trends manually until automated reporting catches up.Do not focus only on increasing the number. Given the ambiguity around how a view is counted, use it to compare your own posts against each other over time, not as a precise external benchmark. What This Means for Agencies and Multi-Location BusinessesThe rollout is genuinely useful, but it lands with a real gap for anyone managing more than a handful of profiles. Because the data is not available through the Business Profile API, there is currently no way to pull post view counts into a centralized dashboard automatically. An agency managing fifty client profiles, or a brand managing fifty locations, has to open each profile individually to see this number. That is a manual, repetitive task, which is exactly the kind of work tools like GMB Pro's automated reporting exist to remove once the underlying data is programmatically accessible. Until Google opens post views up through the API, GMB Pro continues to track the profile-level metrics that are already available, calls, clicks, direction requests, and review activity, across every location from one dashboard, so you are not flying blind while this specific feature matures. We will add post-level view reporting to that dashboard as soon as Google makes it available through the API.Final ThoughtsPost view counts fill a measurement gap that local marketers have complained about since Google removed the original metric in 2023. It is a genuinely useful addition, but the honest picture is that it arrives with real limits: no click data, no confirmed definition of a view, no API access yet, and a rollout that has not reached every account. Use the number as one more signal for what is landing with your audience, not as a final verdict on any single post.If you would rather not check post cards one by one across every location you manage, GMB Pro's post scheduling and automated reporting already track the profile-level metrics Google exposes today, across every listing from a single dashboard. GMB Post Size: The Complete Image and Video Specification Guide

Upload the wrong size image to a Google Business Profile post and Google will not reject it outright, it will just crop it, usually from the center, cutting off exactly the part you wanted people to see. This guide gives you the exact specs for GMB posts in 2026, plus the related specs for photos, cover photos, and logos, since mixing these up is where most of the confusion actually comes from.Quick AnswerThe recommended GMB post image size is 1200 x 900 pixels at a 4:3 aspect ratio, uploaded as a JPG or PNG between 10 KB and 5 MB. This is different from a general profile photo, which uses a 1:1 square ratio at 720 x 720 pixels. Videos in posts can be up to 30 seconds long and up to 75 MB, at a minimum resolution of 720p.Key TakeawaysPost images use a 4:3 ratio at 1200 x 900 pixels, not the 1:1 square ratio used for general photo uploads. What's New, Offer, and Event posts all share the exact same image specs. The post type changes the fields available, not the media requirements.Videos can run up to 30 seconds and 75 MB at 720p or higher, per Google's official guidance.Post text has a 1,500 character limit, but only the first 100 to 300 characters typically show before a customer has to click through.Off-ratio images are not rejected, they are cropped from the center, which is how logos and text end up cut off.The Complete Size Cheat SheetBookmark this table. It covers every image and video type you can upload to a Google Business Profile, not just posts, since these specs get confused with each other constantly.Media TypeRecommended SizeFormatFile SizePost image (What's New, Offer, Event)1200 x 900 pxJPG or PNG10 KB to 5 MBProfile photo / gallery photo720 x 720 pxJPG or PNG10 KB to 5 MBCover photo1024 x 576 pxJPG or PNG10 KB to 5 MBLogo720 x 720 pxJPG or PNG10 KB to 5 MBVideo (posts or gallery)720p minimumMP4 recommendedUp to 75 MB, up to 30 secondsPost Image Size in DetailFor the image inside a Google Post specifically, 1200 x 900 pixels at a 4:3 ratio is the size to aim for. Google technically accepts smaller images, with a practical floor around 250 x 250 pixels, but anything under roughly 720 pixels on the short side tends to look soft or pixelated once Google's system processes and displays it across Search, Maps, and the Knowledge Panel. Why 4:3 and not square or widescreenGoogle displays post images in a 4:3 frame. Upload a square (1:1) or widescreen (16:9) image instead, and Google crops it to fit, typically from the center. That crop can cut off a logo sitting near the edge, trim the top of a dish in a food photo, or slice off part of a headline overlay. Building your image at 4:3 from the start avoids this entirely.Keep key details in the safe zoneEven at the correct ratio, keep logos, faces, and text within the central 80 to 90% of the frame. The outer edges are the first area trimmed if Google's display context needs a slightly different crop on a particular device or surface.Video Specs for PostsGoogle's official guidance allows videos up to 30 seconds long, up to 75 MB in file size, at a minimum resolution of 720p. In practice, some businesses have uploaded longer videos successfully, since file size rather than duration appears to be the harder limit, but quality is often reduced once you exceed the official spec, and Google does not guarantee longer videos will process correctly. For a reliable result, stay within the 30-second, 75 MB guideline and export at 720p or 1080p.A short, focused video, 10 to 20 seconds, well under the file size cap, tends to be more useful for a local business than a video stretched to the edge of the limit.Character Limits and TextPost descriptions allow up to 1,500 characters. What actually matters more is the first 100 to 300 characters, since that is roughly what shows in the Knowledge Panel before a customer has to click through, and the exact cutoff shifts depending on whether a call-to-action button is included. Front-load the specific offer, date, or detail rather than saving it for the end of a long paragraph.Call-to-Action Button OptionsEach post can include one call-to-action button. The available options are:Book, linking to a booking or reservation pageOrder online, linking to a food or product ordering pageBuy, linking to a product or e-commerce pageLearn more, linking to any relevant pageSign up, linking to a registration or newsletter pageCall now, using the phone number already on your profileOffer posts also support an optional coupon code and redemption link instead of, or alongside, a standard button.Does Size Differ by Post Type? This is where people often get confused. What's New (the default, standard update post), Offer, and Event posts all use the identical image specification: 1200 x 900 pixels, 4:3 ratio, JPG or PNG, 10 KB to 5 MB. What changes between post types is the extra fields available, an Offer post adds start and end dates plus a coupon code, an Event post adds a specific date and time, but the media requirements stay exactly the same across all three.Standard posts stay in their most visible, active placement for about seven days. After that, they are not deleted, they move into an archived state still accessible under "View previous posts," while a fresh post takes the prominent spot. That is one more reason a steady weekly posting habit matters more than a single well-designed post.Common Sizing MistakesUploading a square Instagram-style image directly into a post, resulting in an unwanted center crop.Placing a logo or text too close to the edge, which gets trimmed in some display contexts even at the correct ratio.Using a heavily compressed, low-resolution image that looks fine on a phone screen but blurs once scaled for Search and Maps.Assuming Offer or Event posts need a different image size than a standard post, and formatting inconsistently as a result.Uploading a video near the 75 MB cap without checking resolution, resulting in Google reducing quality further during processing.Let GMB Pro Handle the SizingNone of these specs are complicated individually, but remembering them every single week, for every location, is exactly the kind of small detail that slips. GMB Pro's post automation generates and formats images to the correct 4:3 post specification automatically, so every scheduled post is sized right without anyone checking a pixel count.Never think about post dimensions againGMB Pro creates AI-generated posts, sized correctly for Google's post frame, and schedules them automatically across every connected location. For the full picture of what to actually post, see our guide on Google Business Profile management, which covers posting cadence alongside reviews, photos, and audits. The Bottom LineGet the ratio right and most of the guesswork disappears: 4:3 for post images, square for general photos and logos, 16:9 for the cover photo, and 30 seconds under 75 MB for video. The rest is consistency, showing up weekly with a properly sized image so nothing gets cropped, blurred, or lost at the edges.

GMB Meaning: What GMB Actually Stands For

Quick AnswerIn digital marketing and local SEO, GMB stands for Google My Business, the free tool Google gave businesses to manage how they appear on Search and Maps. Google renamed it Google Business Profile (GBP) in November 2021, but GMB is still the more commonly searched and spoken term, and it refers to the exact same thing.Note: If you landed here looking for something other than the marketing term, GMB has a few other common meanings too, including a UK trade union and a British TV show. We’ll cover each of these in more detail later in this guide. Key TakeawaysGMB most commonly stands for Google My Business in a marketing or business context.Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile in November 2021 and retired the standalone app in 2022.GMB and GBP describe the exact same free Google product, just from different points in its naming history.Outside of marketing, GMB can also stand for the GMB trade union in the UK, Good Morning Britain, Grand Master Bowman in archery, and more.Software tools, including GMB Pro, often keep GMB in the name because it is still the term most people actually search for.GMB Meaning in Digital MarketingIf you came across "GMB" on a marketing blog, in an SEO report, or from an agency, it almost certainly stands for Google My Business. This was Google's free tool for managing a business's presence on Google Search and Google Maps, covering the name, address, phone number, hours, photos, reviews, posts, and more, all pulled from one profile. The tool itself has not gone anywhere. What changed is the name. Google now calls this same product Google Business Profile, often shortened to GBP. So when someone asks what GMB means today, the honest answer has two layers: historically and colloquially, it means Google My Business, and officially, that product is now called Google Business Profile. Why Did GMB Become Google Business Profile?Google's local listings tool has changed names more than once. It started in 2005 as Google Local Business Center, went through Google Places and Google+ Local, and in 2014 was consolidated into a single product called Google My Business. On November 4, 2021, Google renamed it again to Google Business Profile, and in 2022 it retired the standalone GMB app entirely, moving day-to-day management directly into Google Search and Maps (Search Engine Land).Nothing about the underlying features changed with that rename. The reviews, posts, photos, and business information all carried over. The name changed, along with where you manage your profile. Is GMB the Same as GBP?Yes, completely. Here’s a simple comparison in one table. Years after the official rename, search habits have not fully caught up, and neither has everyday conversation. Keeping the familiar name makes the product easier to find, while everything it does is built entirely around the current Google Business Profile platform.Manage your Google Business Profile automaticallyWhatever you call it, GMB Pro connects to your Google Business Profile through Google's own API and automates posts, review replies, rank tracking, audits, and reporting. The Bottom LineGMB means Google My Business, the tool now officially called Google Business Profile.
